Polako razvija patološki odnos sa Božinom, agentom tajne policije koji ga stalno drži pod prismotrom, podmuklo pokušavajući da oblikuje Matejev um tako što falsifikuje njegovu prošlost i pretvara lutkara u marionetu novog totalitarističkog režima. Naporedo, pripovjedač nas vraća u prošlost, gdje pratimo priču o Matejevim zatvorskim iskustvima i ljudima koje je tamo upoznavao, nerijetko nevinim, fizički i mentalno slomljenim od strane nehumanog sistema koji će tokom četiri decenije torture dovesti Rumuniju na ivicu kolektivnog očaja. Matej Brunul je jedan od kultnih romana rumunske književnosti XXI vijeka, neobična pripovijest, na momente komična, ali češće tragična, o čovjeku koji je simbol patnje čitavog jednog naroda izloženog teško opisivoj torturi.
